How each one works
Cable TV arrives through a coaxial cable into a receiver box. IPTV arrives as data over your internet connection and plays in an app or on a provider box. Note that many “cable” companies now deliver their TV over IP too: Rogers Ignite TV and Bell Fibe TV are both IPTV services.
Side-by-side comparison
| IPTV | Traditional cable | |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Usually none: install an app | Technician and wiring often needed |
| Equipment | Your TV, stick or phone (or a provider box) | Receiver box, often rented |
| Internet needed | Yes, stable broadband | No |
| Watch on phones and laptops | Usually yes | Limited to companion apps |
| Moving house | Take it with you | New installation |
| Contracts | From fixed-term plans to monthly | Monthly or term contracts |
| Regulation | Carrier IPTV is CRTC-regulated; independent services vary | CRTC-regulated |
Cost
Cable and carrier TV bills often include box rental and fees, and promotional prices can rise after a few months. Every licensed TV distributor must offer an entry-level basic package of no more than $25 a month, with channels added individually or in small bundles (CRTC: Choose your TV channels (entry-level package of $25 or less)). IPTV plans range from app subscriptions to fixed-term plans like ours in CAD. Compare the full yearly cost, not the first month.
Picture quality and reliability
Both can deliver excellent HD. IPTV can reach 4K where the content exists, but depends on your internet: a congested Wi-Fi network will hurt it, while cable is unaffected by your home network. If your internet is slow or unreliable, cable or satellite may still be the better choice.
Who should choose which?
- Choose IPTV if you have good broadband, want to watch on several devices, move often, or want to avoid box rentals.
- Stick with cable or satellite if your internet is slow or capped, you want the simplest possible remote-and-box setup, or you live where broadband is limited.
