1. Picture quality: HD, Full HD and real 4K
Most live channels are broadcast in HD (720p or 1080i/1080p). 4K is limited to selected films, series and some major sports events. A service advertising “all channels in 4K” is exaggerating. Ask which content is genuinely available in 4K, and check that your TV, device and connection can play it.
As a practical guide, allow about 5–10 Mbps per HD stream and 15–25 Mbps per 4K stream on a stable connection.
2. Device support
Check your exact devices, not just “smart TV”. Samsung (Tizen), LG (webOS), Sony and other Google TV sets, Amazon Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Android TV boxes, phones and computers all use different apps. See our guides for smart TVs and Fire TV Stick.
3. Channel guide (EPG)
An electronic programme guide shows what is on now and next. A good EPG matches Canadian time zones (Newfoundland to Pacific) and updates reliably. Without it, live TV becomes a guessing game.
4. Catch-up and recording
Carrier IPTV usually includes a cloud or box PVR. Many apps offer on-demand episodes instead. Independent IPTV services vary: ask whether catch-up exists and for which channels.
5. Simultaneous connections
One connection means one screen at a time. If two people want to watch different things, you need two connections. Check the price of extra connections before ordering.
6. Channel availability in your region
TV rights are sold by territory and sometimes by province. A service may carry a channel in one market and not another. Ask before you buy if a channel or team matters to you, especially for regional sports.
7. Support
Look for a support channel a person answers (WhatsApp, phone, email), stated hours, and help in English or French. Test it before you buy: send a question and see how quickly you get a useful answer.
8. Price, renewal and refunds
Compare the total price in CAD, not just the “per month” figure on a long plan. Check whether the plan renews automatically and read the refund policy. Carrier bundles often have equipment fees and promotional prices that rise later.
9. Transparency and legitimacy
A legitimate provider publishes its terms, privacy policy and business details, and does not promise channels it has no right to show. Read Is IPTV legal in Canada? for the legal background.
